FAQ
Common questions from property managers and facility directors.
Yes. Oregon requires portable fire extinguishers in most commercial, industrial, and multi-family buildings per NFPA 10 and the Oregon Fire Code. Requirements vary by occupancy type and hazard level — your local AHJ determines specific placement and quantity requirements.
Under NFPA 10, the building owner or their designated representative is responsible for monthly visual inspections — checking that extinguishers are in place, accessible, and show no obvious damage. Annual professional inspections are a separate requirement handled by a certified technician like PDX Fire Protection.
Hydrostatic testing uses water pressure to verify that an extinguisher’s shell can safely hold its working pressure without failure. NFPA 10 requires this test every 12 years for most stored-pressure extinguishers. If a unit fails, it must be condemned and replaced.
Every six years, stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers must be emptied, internally inspected, and recharged. This ensures that internal components, O-rings, and valve seats are in good condition and the agent hasn’t caked or settled over time.
Yes. Our technicians carry common replacement extinguishers and recharging equipment. If a unit needs to be replaced or recharged during the annual inspection, we handle it on the spot so you leave fully compliant.
